First-Timers
Congratulations for making it this far! You must have some curiosity at the very least.
Don't worry, we all started out standing in your shoes as a beginner, even the experts! We remember how it feels not knowing what to expect, and we're here to help guide, support and encourage you through every step of your pole journey - starting now.
This page will help answer some common questions, giving you the intel you need to walk into your first class with confidence!
Who We Are
We believe in building people up!
Life can be stressful, time is precious, so if you're spending even a minute of your time at SkyBound, we make it our mission to make sure you leave feeling better than you did when you walked in.
We'll level with you - pole can be hard work! It's a workout for both the body and the mind. That's why we believe that creating a fun and supportive environment is so important, so that you feel supported and celebrated in trying new things and pushing your boundaries!
What Can I Expect In My First Class?
Don't worry, we remember feeling anxious before our first class. First and foremost, when you step through our door, you can expect to feel welcome. We won't be doing anything crazy or going upside down...yet!
We will start with the basics and build from there. Classes are focused on simple spins from the floor, seats and climbs. You will get used to different ways of gripping and moving around the pole, to start building the strength and coordination you need to take things a little higher.
Every class starts with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by some pole-based exercises. We then look at 2-3 pole tricks, breaking them down step-by-step, and trying to link them together. To finish, we will do a 5-minute cool-down stretch.
You can expect all your victories in class, big or small, to be celebrated by a welcoming community!
"I'm Not Strong/Fit/Slim Enough..."
We hear this ALL THE TIME! It's an oxymoron. It's like saying you're not strong enough to go to the gym, or not smart enough to go to school. You are welcome exactly as you come...whatever shape, size, age, ethnicity, fitness level or anything else that may be. We all start somewhere, and that starting point usually doesn't include being able to deadlift your own bodyweight!
Don't worry, we will build all the strength and co-ordination you'll need in class along the way, no matter your starting point. The key is starting!
What Should I Wear?
A lot of amazing tricks and shapes in pole fitness require traction between your skin and the pole for grip. For beginner level, we will mainly be using leg, hand and armpit grips, so it's best to wear shorts with a sports bra and an optional sleeveless top. You are welcome to wear leggings or joggers over the top until we need any leg grip if you're more comfortable, especially if it's chilly!
What Should I Bring To My First Pole Class?
Your first class can be tiring work! Be sure to bring your Water Bottle along so you can stay hydrated during class.
Any moisture can make the metal poles slippery. Having a Small Towel to help keep your hands dry can keep you spinning around for the whole class!
Contact between jewellery and the poles can scrape off the coating, making the poles susceptible to rust and unfit to use. Wearing rings for pole can be dangerous - we don't wan't any degloved fingers!
Please Remove Jewellery Before Class, or leave it at home!
Applying lotion too close to your class can make your skin and the pole really slippery. Try Not To Moisturise Within 12h Prior To Your Class.
Yourself! Whatever shape, size, age, background or even mood, we will welcome you exactly as you come. Our aim is to make you feel better when you leave than when you arrived!
Okay, I'm Convinced. How Do I Get Started?
That's great! We can't wait to meet you!
So now you are decided, we have some options for you...
We would highly recommend booking onto a beginners course if you've never tried pole before - It really is the best entry to the world of pole. You will be in a room of fellow first-timers, all invested for the duration of the course and building from the ground up. By the end of the course, you will have mastered some simple spins and seats and be confident in doing short combinations of movements. This will give you the best foundation to start progressing in the sport.
We understand that not everyone's lifestyle supports committing to the same time each week. If you need a little more flexibility you can book single beginners classes using our pay-as-you-go option or class packs. You can find out more about our payment options here.
